Cedar Falls, Iowa is a town in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cedar County. The first settler in what is now Cedar Falls was James Hargrave in 1836. He built a log cabin on the banks of the rapids near present day downtown. In 1846, two brothers named John and Michael Reese started a gristmill on the river near where I-80 presently meets Interstate Highway 517. They also owned land around present day downtown which they used for farming and milling until about 1912 when they sold their entire property to the Ames Manufacturing Company for $1 million dollars (the largest gift ever given to an American community). The city of Cedar Falls was organized on December 15, 1913 by ordinance from a group of local businesses and citizens who wanted to create an economic center around which they could develop new products and services. The original city hall building still stands today as part of First National Bank Plaza across from City Hall Park on Main Street. The growth of Cedar Falls during World War II led to increased demand for goods produced by Ames Manufacturing Company such as munitions, rubber products and airplane parts throughout much of America. When war ended, production ceased at Ames Manufacturing Company but not at its former plant in Cedar Rapids where many employees chose to stay on because there were no guarantees that their jobs would come back after hostilities ended. The company's former manufacturing buildings are still used by other companies as office space or warehouses today. In 1985, Cedar Rapids voters passed a resolution recognizing heroism related to military service within our community during World War II with cash prizes totaling $5,000 each available for those who provided information leading to convictions or acknowledgements from federal law enforcement officials or members of our own military forces connected with that conflict.(see "Cedar Rapids Remembers World War II" online article) On November 3rd 2003 all parade routes will be closed off while City leaders participate in ceremonies honoring Medal Of Honor recipients including Colonel Edward Condon who served with distinction alongside his fellow townsmen Bruce Koplik (USAF), Bob Larsson (USAF) & Loren Petersen (USAAF) during Operation Market Garden
