He named his company “Sauer, Sturm und Drang” after two German arms manufacturers, Sauer and Sturm und Drang. In 1902, Sauer founded a subsidiary company called “Ruger” which continued to make holsters until 1988. The first handguns that were made in Cedar Falls were revolvers from 1876-1878. These handguns were produced by John Sauer himself and his son George. From 1888-1892, the company produced shotguns using billet aluminum frames that was specified by the U.S Department of Agriculture as being less brittle than wood or other materials used in shotguns at the time. This new material was used to produce some of the most famous firearms manufactured in Cedar Falls such as the Browning Hi-Power rifle and revolver series that are still popular today. In 1903, John Sauer passed away leaving his son George behind with the business name RUGER INC.. George soon decided to start producing rifles instead of just handguns and renamed the company again to “Browning Arms Corp” which it remains today. The first rifles produced under this new name were the BAR (Bolt Action Rifle) series which became very successful commercially over a period of several years before finally being discontinued in 1945 when production moved to Springfield Armory near Chicago Illinois where it still remains popular today! In 1948 Ralph Browning joined forces with George Bendix who had left Browning Arms Corp., creating what is now known as Beretta Firearms Corporation Incorporated (BFCI). This merger resulted in Browning designating all firearms made under their umbrella as Beretta weapons regardless of whether they were pistols or rifles! This gave rise to one of Beretta’s most famous trademarks – The Beretta Shield which has been seen on many high profile firearms including pistols like SIG P226/P228/9mm Glock 17/19/.380 ACP Colt Cobra Revolvers etc! From 1949-1964 BFCI produc ed only assault weapons although production did continue for chambered rounds for police service duty until 1984 when all assault weapon manufacturing was discontinued due to increased regulation by government agencies!!! By 1985 almost all individual handgun manufacturing operations had closed down due eitherto lack of demand or competition from more efficientmanufacturers such as Glock AG etc!!!!! Today there is only one remaining gun maker based out of Cedar Falls – Smith & Wesson!!

In 1948 UI merged with UI's rival Iowa State Teachers College to become one of the nation's most comprehensive doctoral universities with more than 30 programs available to undergraduate students and many professional degrees as well including doctorates in such fields as dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry/optometristry/ophthalmology and psychology/psychology research schools
