One woman said to the other: "That looks like where we're going to put our house" while the other replied "No, we're not going to put our house anywhere near those cedars". Cedar Falls Cove became an important fishing spot due to its good water quality and plentiful fish populations during early settlement times. Many local businesses were started because of this valuable fishery including Whetstone Lumber Company which still operates out of downtown Cedar falls today (2007), J H Glass Co (1910), First National Bank (1898-1900), Wesleyan Methodist Church (1881-1882) and now First Baptist Church (1920). Over time some important civic buildings such as city hall were constructed including a school building completed in 1902, fire hall completed 1915 and cemetery completed 1926/27 although some additions have been made such as a grocery store opened 1959 followed by another restaurant called Denny's 1975 which replaced an earlier restaurant operated by Fenton's Hardware & Shop Inc., also known as Donnybrooks before being renamed Denny's again 1978 before closing 2006 after several years of decline having lost most of its customers to neighboring towns such as Waterloo or BurlingtonIowa without replacement plans offered until 2006 when demolition began resulting in much local opposition which led to successful protests resulting in new development coming along what had once been Cederfalls Cove including shopping mall anchored by Sears stores adjacent to Restaurants Ames Market opposite Interstate 80 just south of I-80 exit 95 Plymouth Drive North

Cedar Falls was founded in 1854 by the Cedar family. The town became a flourishing agricultural center, and its citizens enjoyed close relationships with their surrounding communities. In 1916, the Cedar Falls Civic Association was founded to promote downtown development and improve marketing opportunities for the town. The association successfully lobbied for passage of city ordinance No. 1, which authorized the formation of a zoning district for downtown Cedar Falls. This ordinance helped create a more vibrant and prosperous downtown area, and it led to increased settlement within the walls of the old town.
