The first settler in Cedar Falls was James Dickey in 1854. The town was founded on the east side of the Chenango River by John Irwin and his family. In 1865, J.W. Asbury made an investment in a farm near Cedar Rapids and purchased land from the Irwin family for $1,000 (). Asbury built a log schoolhouse and store in Cedar Falls which he named "Asbury's Store." In 1870, Phebe Farnsworth bought land east of Cedar Falls from A.F. Smith for $2,000 (). Farnsworth erected several buildings including a blacksmith shop and home which he called "Farnsworth's House." Farnsworth served as Mayor of Cedar Falls from 1872 to 1880; he also served as postmaster and justice of the peace.. The city of Cedar Rapids was incorporated on December 14, 1898 (). At its incorporation ceremony,ldermen Wm Sledgehammer (D), Ira Cook (I), Geo Hinchcliffe (G) and Fenton Wallace (V) solemnly pronounced: "We are setting up our little village here today because we want to be one with you people." One hundred years later - on November 15th - that same group met again to celebrate their anniversary with fireworks displays over downtown streetscapes during Apple Blossom Festival days - just like back then! On July 17th 1916 Winona Coleman became the first female elector in Iowa when she voted at an election polling place inside Sheboygan County Courthouse where she had been arrested before voting that day! On November 3rd 1916 residents voted via absentee ballots instead of appearing atpolling places due to World War I hostilities; this marked onlythe third timeinIowathatabsenteeballotingwasusedinsteadofappearingat pollingplaces! After World War I ended on April 6th 1919 local businesses formed "Business Improvement District No 1" () to help promote economic development within their communities; this lasted until 1932 when it merged into current-day Polk County government!
