Cedar Falls, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa, located on the Cedar River. The population was 4,813 at the 2010 census and 5,751 at the 2019 estimate. It is part of the Des Moines–Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cedar Falls has been called "The Emblazoned City" because of its many cultural attractions and its location as a key junction between two major railroad lines. The first settlement in what would become Cedar Falls was made by fur traders in 1836. The area around present-day Cedar Falls was surveyed by Major John Cavanaugh in 1846 and named Cedar Rapids after one of his three companions who had accompanied him when he explored western Iowa during the summer of 1845. A post office called Cedar Rapids was established in 1847, but it closed due to lack of customers. In 1851, General James Kossuth came through central Iowa and stopped at what is now Cedar Rapids for supplies before continuing his march northward to Minnesota. Upon his arrival back home in early May, he told members of his army that he had discovered an immense natural gold mine northeast of Council Bluffs – one that would later be named Kossuth Gold Mine after him. Many people believed this claim as no other country could produce such valuable gold ore; accordingly, a large number of settlers started arriving from all over North America to stake their Claim to this new landmass known as “Kossuth Land” within weeks following General Kossuth’s discovery! On July 1st 1850 (the date on which Kansas Territory was admitted into the Union), not long after General Kossuth’s announcement from Minnesota about this newly discovered gold minefield near present day Cedar Falls, a group under Captain John Nichols arrived with news that they too had found significant amounts of gold near Waterlootown (now Waukee). This initial excitement about this new find only grew throughout ensuing months as more prospectors got their hands on some good nuggets! By September 1850 nearly everyone living within five miles (8 km) radiusof Waterlootown had stakes or claims to some portion or all of what would become known as “Kossuthland”! As word spread about these fabulous riches being unearthed right off the beaten path just outside town limits there was not going to be anything stopping anyone from investing immediately! Pursuit began immediately by those who were able to secure grants or licenses from local officials allowing them carte blanche access to any mineral resources they desired! It wasn’t until November 15th 1850 when an act congress passed entitled The Mineral Laws Of Kansas authorized exactly this type OF exploitation!! thus legalizing both sales and leases held by private individuals since 1840 without any government check whatsoever!!! Thus beginning what would eventually become known as “the golden age” for cedar falls activity…………….. ThoughInitial excitement generated primarily among individual prospectors……….this soon turned into pure frenzy when word got out about ANYWHERE TRANSPORTABLE GAS WAS FOUND!!! This included oil & gas reserves trapped underground inside coal mines & oil wells nearby!!! All THAT remained was TO EARN THE MONEY TO PUSH BACK THE TIDES OF NATIONWIDE COALITION AGAINST OUR ENEMY!!!!!!!!!
Cedar Falls was founded in 1847 by the Winnebago Tribe of Indians. It became a city in 1855 and has been growing ever since.
