The first settler in what is now Cedar Falls was James Goudreau in 1855. He and his family moved to this area from Oregon about that time. The first post office had been established in 1872, and the town name was changed to Cedar Falls on November 3, 1893 due to confusion with nearby city of Des Moines. Cedar Falls has experienced rapid growth over the years; it became a full-time municipality on July 1, 1986. Development began around this time with the erection of several high-rise buildings near Main Street and Broadway Avenue.
