Cedar Falls, Iowa is a town in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cedar County. Cedar Falls is located on the Des Moines River. The first white person to live in what is now Cedar Falls was wagoner Ebenezer Stevens in 1836. In 1839 a post office called Cedar Rapids was established and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. The name "Cedar" originated from the context of where it was located: on the banks of the river which ran through this area at that time (the late 1800s). Because of its location on an important route between Minneapolis and Chicago, settlers christened it "Cedar Rapids." This name stuck and has been used ever since even though other settlements were nearby such as Wildwood (now West Des Moines) and Ankeny (now Ames). In 1846 local farmers started a cotton mill which became one of the largest mills east of the Mississippi River. This made Cedar Falls one of the most important cities in Iowa because it supplied goods to many eastern farms along with providing jobs for local residents. During World War II industry grew rapidly with shipbuilding taking off due to new technology; however, by 1945 Jasmine Paper Products had closed its doors due to lack of demand from overseas after Japan's surrender. However, subsequent growth led Jasmine back into production in 1949 before finally shutting down again c1991 following a fire that destroyed most of their plant including their library and archives connected thereto; this event helped lead to increased development around town with businesses opening up near both existing libraries while also creating more residential areas specifically for people who worked downtown or near major transportation arteries like Second Avenue and Interstate 80/Hawthorne Boulevard (then I-80/I-80 Alternate), among others. Cemeteries served included Mount Carmel Baptist Church west OF town center—opened 1888–89—and Zion Lutheran church east OF town center—opened 1907.—All 3 were abandoned circa 1950 when cemetery opened elsewhere.—One notable exception pertains to Stone Ridge Cemetery northwest OF towncenter which operated until 1924 when members voted not TO disbanding local branch but instead kept separate family burial service.—This cemetery remains active today & regularly hosts events like genealogy walks.– another example would be Greenfield Cemetery southeast OF city limits which operates separately FROM municipal services.—In 1990 Cedar Rapids adjoined neighboring West Des Moines via Bridge Street bridge so Congregational Unitarian Universalist church moved FROM old pioneer courthouse square into enlarged current complex across river just northwest Of city Limits & continues worship there today.--Since then much development has taken place inside City Limits + outside Townlimits so thorough map lookup wouldn't be possible here
