Cedar Falls, Iowa is a small town located in Cedar County, Iowa. The population was 1,568 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sioux City, IA-OK Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Cedar Falls were the Potawatomis who founded a Village in 1837. When the railroad came through their land they were forced to leave and started over again on a new site about two miles east of present day Cedar Falls. They named their new village after cedar trees which grew near their original location. The village only lasted for about a year before it was abandoned because of too many Indians coming through looking for trade goods that they could not find at their old site. In 1855 an act of Congress made Cedar Rapids the capital of Iowa Territory with allocating $10,000 for its construction and this gave impetus to founding Cedar Falls as an actual town by July 3rd, 1856 when citizens voted to change its name from "Potawatomie" to "Cedar Falls". It took until 1871 before schools began being built in town and by 1870 there were six businesses including three banks and two churches. By 1880 there were twenty residents living in what became known as “The Town” while another hundred or so lived scattered around rural areas within easy reach of downtown Cerfalfe falls
