The city was founded in 1852 and named for Burlington, England. It is the largest city in Cedar Rapids County by population and one of its most populous cities outside of Des Moines. The first settlers in what is now Burlington were white men who migrated from Illinois after the American Civil War. They arrived around 1852 and built a log cabin on the banks of the North Fork Des Moines River. The town quickly grew into a small but bustling community with a diverse economy based on agriculture, manufacturing, services, and tourism. In 1917, Burlington became an incorporated municipality and has continued to grow throughout its history as a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to both England and America. Today, Burlington continues to be an important economic center for central Iowa with over 100 businesses operating in its downtown area alone!

Burlington, Iowa is a small town located in northeastern Iowa. The population was 1,834 at the 2000 census. Burlington is the county seat of Polk County and was founded in 1859 by settlers from Illinois. It became a city in 1902. In 2006, Burlington was named one of the "Top 10 Best Places to Live" by US News and World Report. The first permanent settler in Burlington were two families from Illinois who arrived on July 4, 1859, when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad reached Burlington via that state. They built a log cabin on land they had purchased from the government for $5 per acre. The first mayor of Burlington was James Wills, an American Civil War veteran and member of the Iowa House of Representatives from 1871 to 1875. Wills served as mayor twice more before he died in office on December 25, 1889 (age 72). He bequeathed his mayoral term to his son John Hickey Wills Jr., who served as mayor until 1905. In 1902, Burlington became one of the cities that joined Des Moines through an act of Congress which authorized creation of metropolitan areas within each state with maximum populations of 20,000 people or more without violating federal antitrust laws. As part of this change in municipal governance, Burlington annexed most adjacent rural townships including Northampton Township and Addison Township which had less than 10 residents at their peak census population count but whose villages formed part of what is now known as Northampton Township while Addison Township continued to serve as its own municipality until 1901 when it too became annexed into Burlington proper. As part of this process annexation submitted petitions for incorporation with no opposition other than those expressed by local officials concerned about possible loss or diversionary effects resulting from increased business and development opportunities within their communities bordering on larger municipalities such as Des Moines’s north side extending all the way south to Cedar Rapids beyond Waterloo County line - something often seen as detrimental when compared to smaller municipalities’ ability to keep up with commercial growth trends across Interstate 40/Iowa Highway 7 freeway corridor outside their borders - especially if any benefits accrued theretofor for either party interested therein rather than direct economic impact upon those neighboring municipalities where services & infrastructure were already inadequate or unavailable given distance (& sometimes insurmountable cost) intervening between them & downtown Des Moines & suburban Urbandale extenuating circumstances existed due primarily to factors enumerated hereinabove: lack thereof quality road capacity thru deep woods cutting thru rural terrain “backward connectivity” problem ensuing concurrent 2 major I-40/I-74 corridor construction projects nearby making commuting time prohibitively lengthy
Burlington is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 34,681 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Burlington County. Burlington had a population of 31,539 in 2000 and 34,681 as of 2010. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–Urbana metropolitan area. The first known permanent settler in what is now Burlington was Abram French in 1833. In 1836, James Sells established a log cabin near present-day Burlington on the north side of the river where he would live until his death in 1865. In 1837, John Wylie moved from Illinois to settle in what is now Burlington and began trading with Native Americans for goods such as ponies and maize. He also built a cabin on Cedar Creek for himself and his family soon afterwards. One account claims that Wylie helped build an early courthouse which stands today on State Street just east of First Avenue across from the University of Iowa campus; however this claim has been met with skepticism by historians due to lack evidence or documentation to support it. In 1840, when Burlington became a town, its first mayor was Moses Eaton (1802-1872). The first school was erected there on the southeast corner of Third and First Streets by Alpheus Payson (1805-1875). A Methodist church was built northeast ofpresent day Second Street between Fourth and Fifth streets about 1845-46; it burned down in 1898 but parts were reconstructed over time including new architecture similar to that seen today inside the building which houses City Hall: This original structure still stands directly across from City Hall Services at 501 2nd Avenue SW during business hours without any alterations other than painting recent green once again! 2)On April 12th 1870 Union Pacific Railroad Company leased land located just southwest of present day downtown Burlington from Jesse Lubbock & Co.. this area included most or all along present day 2nd Ave southwesterly tonorthwest corner 3rd St/ Riverside Dr 4)This land ran North/South westerly bordered by Cedar Creek watershed west then east then South back into Cedar Creek watershed again 5) Between these easements lies some large tracts owned by individuals prior to incorporation including: Samuel Jones Lots #1 & #2 6) These lots were annexed into newly created city limitssubject to approval by Board Of Elections 7)On November 15th 1870 incorporation took place with Mayor George Fenton as initial officer 8) On December 1st 1870 Council Meeting voted 9 To Adopt A Constitution 10 And 11 Pursuant To Which The City Was Named “Burlington”
