Burlington, Iowa is a small town located in Johnson County, Iowa. The population was 1,619 at the 2010 census. Burlington is the county seat of Johnson County and the only municipality in Johnson County. It is part of the Sioux City, IA-SPD Metropolitan Statistical Area. Burlington was founded in 1854 as a station on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. The first post office was established in Burlington on July 20, 1854. The community changed its name to Burlington in 1856 when a railroad line ran through it and this name stuck until 1984 when it was changed back to its original spelling of Burlington after being selected for a new municipal logo. The city's history can be traced back to 1854 when it became a station on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad following completion of that company's main line from Cedar Rapids to Omaha. At that time there were only five stations within Johnson County with ties to Chicago; Burlington would become one of these six by 1860 thanks to construction of the Des Moines & Western Railway between Cedar Rapids and Phoenix Heights/Burlington which connected with CP&Q at Kingston (now an incorporated village). In 1870–71, another railway connecting Cedar Rapids with Stroudsburg via Waterloo cost $423,000 ($4 million in 2018 dollars) and was completed; this made Burlington an important junction for east-west transportation withinJohnson County as well as providing access to nearby farmland for farming purposes which has continued into present day. On October 10, 1870 Governor John Atherton announced plans for what would eventually become known as downtown Burlington; development proceeded rapidly with various merchants and citizens contributing money towards construction including local builder Gifford Lewis who created what is now First National Bank building along Sixth Street overlooking Lake Michigan just north of Main Street In 1872–73 James Buchanan donated land comprising what are now Fourth Avenue South (northwest corner of Main Street), Seventh Avenue North (southwest corner), Eighth Avenue East (east side) and Ninth Avenue West (west side) Streets near today's Veterans Memorial Hospital While still under construction – due largely to lack of capital – downtown Burlington saw numerous businesses open up such as Second National bank which opened its doors on November 2nd1872 followed by J C Whitney grocery store on December 12th One result significant enough for celebration was streetcars running regularly through downtown streets during morning rush hours servicing various businesses making it possible for residents living north or west of First avenue south or east off Third street serviceable without leaving their homes . Downtown also boasted an opera house built by music man Pashman Brothers [1] giving concerts throughout winter months hosting top orchestras from around America[2]. On April 15th 1875 two men named Hanks were indicted on bribery charges related to purchase by local business interests [3] resulting in them spending three years imprisonment before they were pardoned by President Ulysses S Grant This event ledto increased business activity across all facets while promoting social tolerance which continues into present day with no indication that anything similar will occur again given current political conditions . After being incarcerated he met his future wife here Julia Buxton Hanks who worked at his jail accountancy firm during their three year sentence . Today over eighty years later Burritts Plaza Complex remains one of central shopping districts within city limits offering both affordable housing options[4], retail space[5], restaurants[6], movie theater[7], art galleries[8], library,[9],[10]and more.. Since becoming independent Post Office moved from Rutland Road location opposite courthouse up 4th Ave but never reopened due mail processing services relocated inside new Capitol Annex facility opening October 9th 2001 . One important aspect of Burlington's history is its role as an agricultural center for much of central Iowa during the 19th century. This was due to two factors: first, because Burlington had a high number of miles (km) worth of waterways that allowed shipment unloaded onto wharves nearby; second, because farmers were able to move goods up-and-downriver using wagons or carts instead of having them loaded into ships or trucks
