Butterfield who had fought in the Mexican–American War. The Butterfield railroad crossed Burlington in 1841 and made it an important agricultural and commercial center during its early years, but since then its economy has been largely based on manufacturing and service industries such as information technology and health care services. The city proper was laid out in 1837 by James Kinsman and George Prentice as part of a larger "Center Township," which also included present-day Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, North Manchester, Morris Heights, West Des Moines, South Manchester, East Manchester (now Muskegon Heights), Homer City (later Norwalk), Black Hawk City (later Moline), Decorah (now Des Moines), Dodgeville (now Waukee) and Buffalo Grove (later Grinnell). The township was annexed by Burlington on July 1, 1840; that annexation created what is now called North Burlington Township. The first settler to arrive in what is now Burlington was John G Butterfield who arrived November 12th 1837 from New England on horseback following his return from Mexico where he had served as a captain in Captain Willard's brigade during the Mexican-American War In1838 John Kinsman organized a party consisting of himself James Kinsman Abraham Lincoln(son of President Abraham Lincoln) Nathan Hale(a future Ulysses S Grant) Peter Houghton Samuel Morse(a future Ulysses S Grant) Jonas Nason Elias Hayden(an Indian fighter/fighter for American independence) they traveled overland to this area via Drake's Ferry coming into this country November 11th 1838 There were 9 people original banding together under one name or banner but soon splits happened due to dissension within their group so they went their separate ways splitting up back home very quickly They eventually all came together again around 1840 when they started building homes hereabouts When they got here everything looked like this today except we didn't have any fences we just built them because we thought it would be nice All these houses there today were actually built before anything else ever happened hereabouts back then In 1841 James Kinsman organized another party including himself Abraham Lincoln Nathan Hale Peter Houghton Samuel Morse Jonas Nason Elias Hayden This time traveling overland to this area via Drake's Ferry They reached this area November 25th 1841 However due to illness/diseases 2 men died along with 3 others making it difficult to continue so they returning undiscovered September 8th 42 While enroute back home Nathan Hale shot an animal guide foraging for food near Mount Pleasant killing himcollapsing down about 20 yards away from him everyone presumed he died until found weeks later skeleton wearing pants still inside natural cave system near Mount Pleasant where he likely fell As you can see from this timeline things did not go according2 well with these initial arrivals so much so that event spawned further debates among historians regarding whether or not it constituted an actual invasion or just cross country travel by accident

Burlington, Iowa is a small town located in thewest-central part of the state of Iowa. The population was 9,783 at the 2010 census. Burlington is the county seat of Polk County and has a designated area for preservation called Burlington National Historical Park. Burlington was founded in 1837 by settlers from what is now Nebraska. It became a town in 1854 after it was selected as the site for the new county seat of Polk County. The first post office opened in Burlington on November 15, 1854. The name of the town derived from nearby Burlington Heights which had been named for General James K. Polk who served as President Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of War during his first term (1865-1869). The main economic activity in Burlington during its early days was agriculture, but due to changes brought about by railroad construction and other factors, manufacturing began to develop as well. This occurred principally through what are now known as heavy industry parks such as Lynden Steel Company park and Ford Motor Company Manufacturing Park which were established between 1937 and 1951 when large portions of downtown were destroyed by fire. The type of manufacturing that took place here included automobiles, trucks, engines, turbines and other types of machinery; however some smaller firms did not survive into this period such as Humble Supply Co., Inc., an importer/exporter based out of Omaha who closed their doors in 1978 because they could not compete with larger companies coming online at that time. Development around downtown continued until about 1950 when most buildings north of Eighth Street were razed to make way for Interstate 80/US 30/State Highway 20 which ran through town then cut across it eastward to get to Des Moines proper. This highway Mimicked many features found throughout America during this time including large center median expressways flanked by wide side streets running perpendicular thereto complete with huge boxy structures high enough off the ground to be used for storage or offices; these I-80/US 30/State Highway 20 Expressways have become known locally simply as “The Drive” or just “I-20” within reason having no real historical significance beyond their original purpose(s).
