Burlington, Iowa is a small town in the state of Iowa. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Burlington is located on the Missouri River and has a riverfrontage to the east and west. The community was founded in 1847 by Stephen Fenton and James Hogg. It became an incorporated city in 1958. The first settler in Burlington (then known as "Fentonville") was John Fenton, who arrived in 1847. In 1860, Stephen Fenton donated land to become Burlington, which he named for himself and his wife Hannah. The first post office was established in Burlington on December 12, 1847, with Arent Higdon as the first clerk. In 1862, Burlington became a city under an act of the Iowa Legislature.
