In 1869, Burlington, Iowa was founded and became the provisional capital of the new United States of America. The city's first gunsmith, John H. Burkholder, set up shop in a room in the old Post Office building on State Street. His son-in-law, A.B. Goodspeed, took over the business in 1892 and continued to run it until his death in 1923. The Goodspeed Barrels factory made rifles and shotguns for many years before being sold to Remington Arms Company in 1968. At Remington Arms Company, barrels were made for both civilian and military use as well as for export into many countries around the world. The history of guns is intimately connected with those that have been used to protect our communities from harm – from bows and arrows through cannons to firearms today. From their inception as simple devices used by hunter-gatherers to become instruments of war, firearms have played an integral role in human history both past and present. In Burlington’s case, this involvement began with a rifle designed by John H Burkholder himself back in 1869 – one that quickly became known asIowa’s Rifleman’s Best Friend (IRBF). The IRBF was chambered for a powerful but inaccurate muzzleloader called the ‘Horse Gun’ which was popular among frontier farmers during the early days of American settlement. However, due to its inaccuracy at ranges beyond a few hundred yards (and even closer at close range), this weapon soon saw service only against Native Americans – not against other settlers who were much more numerous and aggressive! However, despite its primarily rural origins; Burlington did play an important role within American gun culture during Reconstruction period following Civil War. This period saw an increased demand for arms due to growing tension between factions vying for control over newly acquired territories north of Mexico City aka Texas - including parts of Iowa! As tensions mounted along these boundaries; so too did demand for high quality firearms able to withstand such violent conditions2! Thanks largely to avid rifle shotters like George Armstrong Custer3; militia forces loyal to Ulysses S Grant4; and local farmers06 – Burlington experienced one of its most prolific periods of gun development ever7! Indeed; someconservative estimates maintain that between1870-1880%, 100%of all Rifles exported out Of Iowa went into Confederate hands8! And while this pattern varied somewhat depending on specific situation9; overall it suggests that gunsplay had become deeply ingrained within American society by then10! Not only were certain companies responsible for making almost everythingfrom pistols & revolvers allthe way up To machineguns12; but individual firearm manufacturers enjoyed significant market share here13!. Consequently; individuals engaged in firearm production not just because they enjoyed doing so (likeJohn H Burkholder), but because it offered them major financial opportunities14!. indeed – when Production peaked here during the late 19th century15!, many young men entered into this lucrative industry after leaving school or starting families16!! It wasn’t long before even small businesses started up specifically devotedtogunmaking17…..such asBurlington Arsenal18!!! While various technological advances helped continue NRA's momentum throughout19th century20 (!); manufacturing jobs remained firmly entrenched withinthisfield21!!! It is located on the Mississippi River. The first people who settled in what would become Burlington were the Sac and Fox Indians. In 1827, Captain Anthony Wayne founded a trading post on the current site of Burlington, which he named for his hometown of Manchester, England. The following year, Captain Wayne's team built a log cabin on land that now forms part of downtown Burlington. By 1830, Burlington had a population of around 20 people and began to grow rapidly thanks to its natural resources - notably lumber from local forests and water power from Niagara Falls - as well as its growing trade with Stroudsburg on Pennsylvania's east side. In 1834, General David Dixon established Fort Atkinson south of modern-day Burlington; however, this fort never grew into much more than a rudimentary military installation due to its location upstream from where transportation became available for settlers overland rather than by riverboat. On July 6, 1836 – three years after Fort Atkinson was established – Vermont resident James Kelson purchased 3 acres (1 km2) near present-day downtown Burlington from fellow Vermont resident Nicholas Merrill with intentions of founding an agricultural community there called Kelson Grove; however, Kelson Grove failed to materialize due to lack of support from either him or other investors. On December 15th, 1840 – one year after Fort Atkinson was abandoned – Willard Hennepin arrived at what is today's eastern edge of Downtown Burlington aboard his ship "Pioneer" with 44 others seeking passage westward through what was then known as Missouri Territory (now Kansas). It became an agricultural community after being chosen as the site of a rail junction in 1872. Burlington's growth led to its incorporation as a city in 1907. The city experienced growth from its peak reached in the early 1960s until it had shrunk by 1998 when it lost its status as an incorporated city due tolder-voting requirements for city government. Although Burlington has been shrinking since its heyday, it retains some of the characteristics that have made it one of the most vibrant cities in central Iowa. The first settlers to Burlington were Methodists who arrived during the 1850s and 1860s. They built log homes on farms that they acquired through purchase or donation from others in the area. In 1872, Burlington was chosen as the site of a railroad junction due to its proximity to other towns and because it offered potential advantages such as good soil for farming and access to new transportation systems. By 1907, Burlington had become an agricultural center with 590 businesses accounting for more than $2 million worth of goods sold statewide each year. Growth continued into the 1920s with construction of Interstate 80 making Burlington one of America's fastest growing cities then and still is today. The Great Depression led to contraction of agriculture throughout much of America but Burlington saw little effect because its residents were able to maintain their livelihoods by using their local resources instead of importing goods or selling abroad. This resilience is witness by what remains today: City Hall features cast iron ducks on top which serve as Municipal Court minutes dating back to 1865; banks still offer safe deposit boxes; restaurants continue serving up traditional American cuisine despite limited competition; high school band concerts are held every Friday night despite only having 8 rehearsals per week due largely because parents are willingto finance instruments outright rather than buy them outright like many other schools across America; while downtown may be struggling with crime rates remaining relatively low compared to most urban areas around Des Moines due mostly to efforts by police officers working undercover within specific districts (e g., Central Area), reactionaries have unsuccessfully tried unsuccessfully over time (and often succeeded) attempt[ing]to gentrify downtown into an upscale shopping area
