Burlington, Iowa is a town on the banks of the Des Moines River in central Iowa. The population was 5,253 at the 2010 census. Burlington was founded in 1853 as a small town on the edge of what is now Ames. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century as railroads came to Burlington and other towns along the Des Moines River. The 20th century saw Burlington experience significant growth thanks to its location near the University of Iowa and other businesses and institutions. In 2000, Burlington became an incorporated city. The history of Burlington begins with settlers who arrived in 1853 from Ohio. They were led by General James Kapp, who had been ordered by President Polk to explore new territory in northwest Iowa Territory. When he reached what is today Burlington, he recommended that it be named for him because "such a place would be most favourable for agriculture." The first settler in what is now Burlington was John Greenough, who arrived in 1854. Greenough's family abandoned their farm after one year due to financial difficulties caused by railroad construction nearby. The first store opened in downtown Burlington on May 1, 1855; it was destroyed by a tornado four years later but quickly rebuilt with help from local residents and friends. In 1860, Vermont Senator John Anderton organized an expedition to survey lands east of Sioux City on the Missouri River for possible colonization or development into Kansas Territory; this expedition resulted inthe founding of Fort Leavenworth some thirty miles (48 km) north-west of present-day Burlington . For many years it served as the territorial capital for Douglas County; however, when Kansas Territory was created out of Illinois Territory on November 16, 1861, Fort Leavenworth became its new capital and remained so until 1907 when it moved back to Omaha then finally Rock Island where it remains today. In 1865–1866 Captain Thomas Hickey Surveyed & mapped much of northeast Iowa which made land grants totaling over 640 acres (248 ha). These grants included parts of present-day Cedar Rapids and Waterloo also part ofIowa City area today Eventually settlement increased around downtown Burlington due to its strategic location just upstream from two major transportation arteries: the Des Moines River and US Highway 361 (now I-80). Railroads soon came through town making232 goods transported per day between Minneapolis/St Louis (then located about 100 miles (160 km) west) and Dubuque via Ames Junction railway station – making it one stop away from all sorts of products needed by growing cities like Chicago and Detroit – while also serving as a supply depot for farmers downriver at Clear Creek Dam along with providing access to farmland further upriver at Waukee Lake reservoir site which became known as Sandersville after early settler Nicholas Sanders purchased some 400 acres (168 ha) there including part now within Ottawa County
Burlington was founded in 1854 by Captain James F. Burlington and his wife, Anna P. Burke. The city is named after James F. Burlington, who donated the land to the town. The first building in Burlington was a log cabin built by Captain Burlington and his family. In 1859, the town built its first sawmill on the riverbank west of downtown. In 1870, the town added a grist mill to its operations and in 1882 it opened its first store. The town's population grew rapidly from small numbers in the early 1800s to over 60 residents by 1860 thanks to growth in agriculture and trade with nearby cities such as Des Moines and Iowa City. In 1892, Burlington became one of five towns that formed the new Des Moines metropolitan area; this merger helped increase economic opportunities for local businesses within Des Moines' expanding boundaries. In 1911, Burlington annexed what is now Muscatine County into the city limits; this annexation helped improve infrastructure around Burlington and made it easier for businesses to find an available market within Des Moines' growing area. The city has continued to grow steadily since becoming a municipality; today it has over 200 residents living within its borders and continues to be an important center for commerce and culture in central Iowa
