Bullets have a long and varied history in Burlington, Iowa. The first bullets were created by the U.S. government in 1859 to help protect soldiers during the American Civil War. The bullets became more popular over time and are now used in many different forms of firearms. Bullets can be classified by their type- lead, silver, steel, bronze, or plastic- but most bullets are made from some form of metal. Bullet types include Copperhead rounds for hunting game animals such as deer or bear, Leadshot rounds for use in artillery cannons and various hunting rounds such as Buzzard Shot and Barnes 300 Win Mag for target shooting. The first ammunition was produced by Nicholas-Jacques Conte at his company “Conte & Co” near Chelsea, England in 1858. This ammunition was used with muzzleloaders which fired shot made from pigs’ blood and feathers which were boiled until they turned into a hard ball then forced through a small hole in the center that had been bored out of the wood). In 1861Lieutenant Colonel John Cushing of the 6th Iowa Infantry discovered that this new ammunition was effective against Confederate cannonballs which had penetrated his unprotected flesh several times while he was fighting on Iuka River near Corinth Mississippi (now Jackson County ). He ordered Conte to produce 5 barrels per day of this new ammunition for his regiment who began using it early in 1862 . In 1863 Captain James Tappan built an experimental factory at Liberty Arsenal outside Philadelphia Pennsylvania to make cartridges specifically for the 6th Iowa Infantry . These cartridges featured a newly designed bullet called “Gadget” which had a short nose (similar to a modern rifle bullet) so that it could enter easily through any opening less than 1/4 inch deep . The round also featured an extended base so that it struck its target close to the ground instead of travelling far away like other rounds of its type . By 1865 all 6thIowa Infantry cartridge rifles were fitted with these new guns making them among the best weapons available to battle units across America When war ended General Ulysses S Grant ordered all munitions factories closed except those producing munitions needed by military veterans only This order left many munitions companies unable to continue production due to lack of orders or money however some continued production under license until 1887 when all licenses expired

In 1907, both First National Bank and Guaranty Trust opened branches in Burlington; these were followed by Farmers State Bank (1927), American National Insurance Company (1936), Mutual Life Insurance Company (1945), Wells Fargo & Co., Inc.(1970), Sears Roebuck & Co., Inc.(1974-1984), JCPenney Corporation(1987-1991)), Time Warner Cable Company(1994-2002)), CGI Group plc.(2003-present) During World War II, General Electric installed sixteen turbines at one of their plants on Main Street known as Humble Plant No 4 which helped power many homes across Northern Illinois until it closed down in 2006 due to age and failure of parts. One turbine still remains standing today outside of Burlington proper with Generator Power Cooperative keeping it operational since 2007 which also provides energy for grid services within commuting distance Today there are no significant businesses or industries remaining within Downtown Burlington other than small office vacancy rates where industrial conversions have taken place such as Stater Bros BBQ restaurant/take out counter conversion into apartment building&apartment complex called "The Landing"which had been vacant for over 10 years beforeental work began on improving transportation access including adding bike lanes &a pedestrian walkway connecting to Old North Bridge
