On October 3rd, 1861 Vermont Postmaster General Levi Pemberton announced that all U.S.-owned mail would be delivered through Chicago before being delivered through Fort Dodge; this caused great excitement throughout the territory as settlers began receiving letters from friends back home that were not received before due to lack of transport options acrossIowa Territory at that time In 1865 local businessman James Hennepin organized a petition drive for annexation into Davenport County but failed to gain enough signatures needed for submission to the Board Of Commissioners In 1868 Wm C Burchwood organized a group which purchased 4 acres (16 acres) adjacent to what is now Union Station for $15 per acre This purchase led directly to development efforts around Union Station as well as surrounding rural areas including North York and Sheffield . A year later another group failed attempt by Minnesota businessmen George Linton & George Heyerdahl To purchase land adjoining present day I-80 between Cedar Rapids and Des Moines Roads for $50 per acre resulting in condemnation proceedings being filed against both groups Although initially opposed by many withinDavenport County officials due largely to their location near Waterloo , incorporation eventually happened on July 1st 1871 when Davenport County was created from portions of Waterloo , Morris , Rock Island ,and Jackson Counties . In 1886 two new post offices opened: One at West Side Market Square in downtown Burlington where mail was sorted until 1978 then moved out into new facilities across Main Street ; one at North High Street near present day Interstate 80 just outside downtown Burlington When First National Bank burned down in 1907 they rebuilt it next door using funds provided by Anthony Quinn who also funded much current infrastructure within the boundaries today including Interstate 80

By 1920, there were only 10 residents living in Burlington proper; however, it still remained an important stopover on Route 12 for travelers heading into Des Moines or away from it. In those days before air travel made such trips much more difficult or expensive than they are today, Burlington served as an important waypoint for travelers traveling between these two cities! One of Burlington's most notable landmarks is its original courthouse building which still stands today within walking distance of downtown! This building served as both a courthouse and jail until 1912 when sheriff's office moved into what is now City Hall Building#2A across Cedar Rapids Boulevard from where early newspapers were printed back then! Additionally - during prohibition - many business owners closed their doors because they could not afford alcohol sales taxes! This situation led to one local resident saying "It would be like spending 1/3rds each night at home without making any money!" Although Prohibition ended in 1933(), some remnants remain such as “Wine Tasting Day” held annually at City Hall Complex on May 25th – considered an unofficial holiday – alluding back nostalgically towards days prior…
