After hostilities ended, many residents decided to return home and rebuild their lives after war-time disruptions such as shortages of food and housing made living back home more difficult than ever before. Consequently, during America's post-war boom years (1929 - 1933), businesses flourished due to increased demand for goods exported from central Iowa by companies like General Electric and Hawkeye Steel Works Inc.. The Great Depression hit Vermont hard however; unemployment rates reached 20%,35% etc., while prices for goods grew more expensive still because production costs rose along with world prices until finally Wall Street crashed leading directly to World War II which caused mass layoffs across Vermont’s steel industry – effectively ending much economic activity throughout that state.).
