Burlington is the county seat of Burlington County and it is part of the Des Moines–Urbana–Champaign metropolitan area. Burlington was founded on July 16, 1847, by General Samuel J. Butterfield as a fur trading post named Cedar Rapids. In 1907, Burlington had a population of 2,812 and it grew to 5,552 by 1990. The growth stopped and by 2000 the population had decreased to 1,811 people. The decrease may be due to two factors: crime and the economic recession that hit the town hard in 2001-2002. The first mention of Burlington comes from Davenport landowner John Sibley who wrote in his journal on October 27th 1855 "that he has found about 20 white men living thereabouts since he moved into this country". This early settlers were either farmers or mechanics who came overland from Vermont during the 1800s for what became known as "theGreat Sioux War". Many of these early settlers brought their families with them when they crossed the Iowa River which at that time was considered quite an undertaking because only Native Americans were allowed through certain points along its course. They erected plank fences between themselves and other tribes living along its banks until such time as they could build better barriers (and thus reduce raiding) within their own territory. That same year another group of pioneers arrived from Illinois via wagon train called "The Great Western Road" which included one Mr Fenton who noted 'a very good market for goods now existing at Cedar Rapids'. A few days later Fenton wrote again "...I have been busy building a road across this river...I think I am going to have it finished before winter sets in' so at least we knew that some sort of transportation existed even though it wasn't yet ready for use! For those young minds of those days traveling cross-country by wagon would have been something completely new! What wonderful memories are made when looking back on old photos like this! By 1860 Burlington had grown rapidly and by 1870 there were 960 residents living here including 98 children under 10 years old! One can imagine how much more crowded things must have become during prohibition Era when alcohol sales weren't allowed! But overall growth slowed throughout much of the 19th century as railroads took over many jobs away from small towns and countryside alike which resulted in less tax revenue being available to support growing populations schools etcetera !" So while today's residents may remember their childhood homes fondly (albeit with different surroundings), most likely little else about those times remains specifically attributable to Burlingtonians – notwithstanding any claims otherwise emanating from pulpits or social media platforms wielded by adults today without knowledge or experience prior thereto ! In 1907 Burlington increased its size slightly with 2,812 residents when it annexe d Cedar Rapids creating what is now known as “Burlington Heights” neighborhood adjacent to downtown just north/west of Iowa State University campus). However despite adding roughly 100 residentships over almost ten years – nothing truly changed materially regarding daily life conditions experienced by all inhabitants except perhaps slight uptick in employment opportunities (+5% total annual gain) thanks largely to expanding Austin Leasing Company + expanded freight service (+10%) associated with burgeoning city center development - directly affecting nearly every family member thereof responsible for day-to-day subsistence activities essential both economically & socially - continuing trend evident following decade’s end; inevitable cessation ensuing 12+ yr pattern resulting largely due azazeltskii Stagnation affecting rural America generally culminating w/ US implosion ↑
