Burlington, Iowa is home to the world’s second oldest ammunition company, Ammunition Manufacturing Company. The company was founded in 1857 by Captain George Stephenson and his brother-in-law, Samuel Colt. Ammunition Manufacturing Company manufactured ammunition for the Union Army during the American Civil War. After the war, Ammo Manufacturing Company became a rifle and shotgun manufacturer. In 1898, Ammo Manufacturing Company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WRA). WRA produced rifles, shotguns, and other firearms across many different brands and models through its subsidiary companies until it was purchased by Seaboard Industries in 1988. Today, Ammo Manufacturing Company is a historical museum located within the city limits of Burlington. Ammunition has been an important part of American History for centuries and has played an integral role in both our military campaigns as well as our everyday lives. During the American Civil War, Ammunition Manufacturers Companys (AMC) supplied munitions to both sides of the conflict. AMC products were used in a variety of battles including Battle of Antietam (September 17-21 1863), Battle of Gettysburg (November 3-7 1865), First World War (1914-1918), Second World War (1939-1945), Korean War (1950-1953), Vietnam War (1969-1973), Cuban Missile Crisis( 1962 ), Operation Desert Storm( 1991 ), and Katrina response( 2005 ). throughout history there have been several types of ammo designed specifically for one particular task or situation: explosives rounds such as dynamite rounds and APFSDS rounds; target rounds like buckshot; incendiary rounds like black powder cartridges;and anti tank rounds such as this M1 Garand round from circa 1903 . The first time that ammunition was fired live was on July 6th 1854 when General Winfield Scott’s Illinois Volunteers opened fire on a bandanna wearing Mexican soldiers at Palo Alto Bridge near Mexico City under orders from Ulysses S Grant. This event marked the beginning of what would become known as “Gunnery School Day” where each infantry regiment member could fire five volleys at 10 yards using any type of muzzleloader they might be proficient with including pistols and revolvers
