Burlington, Iowa is a town in Cedar Rapids County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Missouri River and is east of Council Bluffs. Burlington was founded in 1855 as a fur-trading post on the Arkansas River. The Post Office moved to Burlington in 1859 and became a town in 1865. Burlington has three schools: Northwest High School, Beloit Intermediate School, and Burlington Junior-Senior High School. The Burlington area has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 12,000 years. The first European settlers arrived in 1835 and started trading with the Sioux people near present-day Minneapolis. A group of Swedish farmers called Vänern Jägers had also settled in what is now northeast Iowa by 1840. In 1845, Ulysses S Grant became president of the United States and decided to buy land along the Missouri River south of Independence from speculators before selling it to four thousand Indian owners over five years starting in 1846. This razed most of the Dakota Territory which included what is now Iowa City, Bloomington, Ottawa Junction (now Decorah), Burlington, North Des Moines (then unincorporated part of Des Moines), and much of central Illinois including Mount Vernon Heights (now Chicago). After his inauguration on March 4th1865 as President Abraham Lincoln's Vice Presidential candidate he traveled upriver to Council Bluffs where he delivered an inaugural address that focused on building roads across America so that people could travel Horace Greeley's dream northward.: "It gives me pleasure to open this new Government early...I proclaim that I am not content until every man who can vote or hold office within this territory labors faithfully towards his fellow citizens - not one particle less nor one particle more - without distinction of color or sex."
