The first European to visit Boone was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1694. He named it after John Boone, an American Revolutionary War soldier and surveyor who had been killed during the Battle of Saratoga three years earlier. In 1836, General James Kossuth led an invasion of Missouri that passed through this area, so when he decided to cross over into Iowa on his way to fight against William Henry Harrison, he turned toward Boone instead of following Kossuth's original route to Nebraska. In 1855, Jeptha Silliphant built a store and warehouse on Main Street which became known as "The Market Place." Silliphant later moved his business to what is now northeast corner First Avenue and Center Street within walking distance of downtown Boone for a total cost of $3700 which included lumber from Two Bridges State Forest on Highway 612 northbound (now US 20). This enterprise became known as "Jeptha's Store" until it closed by 1904 because Jeptha could no longer afford the high freight rates charged by other merchants along US 20 at that time The early history of both Cedar Rapids Regional Airport and Drake University can be traced back to 1912 when George Fisher donated land for airport use east of town on Northwest Expressway near present-day Steele Road/Route 10th Street; later called Burlington Field Municipal Airport The first passenger terminal opened in 1936 with Douglas DC-3s used for instruction until 1945 when Cherokee AAF #1 replaced them with IAC C-47s starting June 1946 until May 1949; then World War II ended abruptly without any military flights being made at Burlington Field Municipal Airport either due to prohibition or lack thereof It wasn't until 1949 that Creech AFB came online providing USAF training facilities while Burlington Field Municipal Airport reverted backto commercial Use as an agricultural facility operated by Ames Air Force Base before finally closing its doors permanently in 1957 .
