With its well-developed system of streets and public squares, it soon became an important transportation center for rural residents who needed to get to their jobs or businesses outside town. During World War II (1941-1945), Ankeny saw some major activity due to its proximity to Omaha Naval Station which played a critical role in supplying munitions for America's war effort.
