Ankeny, Iowa is home to the world's first professional rifle range. The Ankeny Rifle Range opened in 1892 and is one of the oldest ranges in the United States. Today, it offers a wide variety of shooting opportunities for both experienced shooters and beginners. NRA members are able to use the range for free. Non-members can purchase passes that entitle them to participate in different sessions at different times of day or week. The Ankeny Rifle Range was one of the early adopters of modern safety features such as triggers lockouts, selective fire capabilities, and jammed pistol magazines. In 1935, NRA member Clarence Kinsey founded Cabelas Sporting Goods which still operates out of the store today. The company became an authorized dealer for Springfield Armory rifles and pistols and offered training courses on how to shoot at the range. In 1948, NRA member Ed Beers organized a group called "The Riflemen" who hired local experts to teach beginner's techniques at an event known as "The Open Air Meeting." This event helped introduce new shooters to target shooting and provided opportunity for more people from all walks of life to engage in this popular pastime.
