Ankeny is a small town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. Ankeny is located on the south bank of the Des Moines River. The first Europeans to visit Ankeny were French traders in 1795. A post office was established here in 1836 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1854, Captain John Wesley Powell passed through Polk County on his way to explore the Great Lakes region. He named one of the valleys near Ankeny "Powell's Valley." In 1861, a railroad was built through Ankeny and several other towns on the river corridor; this led to an increase in population and development around town. After World War II, many farms were converted into housing developments, which led to an even greater increase in population and infrastructure around town; this also caused some decline in industry and jobs during the late 20th century. However, growth has resumed since 2000 as more businesses have opened up within town limits. A new library has been completed just east of town center since 2009 making Ankeny one of the newest libraries in Iowa City area!

In the late 1800s, Ankeny became an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Many abolitionists in Ankeny helped to ensure that slavery would not exist in Iowa Territory.
