Ankeny was founded in 1854 by L.W. Ankeny and his wife, Emma Jane. The town was named for Ankeny County, Iowa, which at the time included the area now known as Ankeny. The first store in Ankeny was opened on Main Street in 1855. In 1865, a post office was established in the town and remained in operation until it closed in 1955. In 1892, A&P grocery store and meat market were built on Main Street. In 1895, a sawmill and gristmill were added to the town's infrastructure. Ankeny's population peaked at around 200 residents in 1920 but began to decline thereafter; it reached its low point of 30 residents in 1945. However, since 1990s the population has begun to slowly increase again with an estimated current population of around 60 residents. The local high school is currently Ankeny-Harrison (AHS). It opened on September 12th, 1974 as Harrison High School; however its original name is still pending from a change from River Valley High School which opened Aug 1st 1959
