Ankeny is a town in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. Ankeny is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Ankeny was Levi Hodge in 1851. A post office called Ankeny was established in 1854, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1875, the town site was donated by John Burt to the city of Des Moines for use as its central business district. The city annexed portions of Ankeny until it had a population of 497 people in 1915. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,868 people, 592 households, and 459 families residing in the town. The population density was 991/km² (2,913/sq mi). There were 605 housing units at an average density of 451/km² (1,205/sq mi). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 2% Native American; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any race were 3%of all residents. There were 592 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them,[citation needed] 44% were married couples living together, 12% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38% were non-families. 32%of all households were made up Of individuals and 16%. Ankeny is a town in Osborne County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,802 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The name Ankeny comes from the Potawatomi word Ankeshiwa, meaning "place where there are birch trees." The first settler in what is now Ankeny was George Haughton in 1839. A post office was established in Ankeny on July 6, 1841, by Wm. Fenton and Gilbert Warrington. In 1846, John Kinnaird settled here with his family. In 1850, James Ladd purchased a tract of land here which included present-day Ankeny Township and much of Osborne County. Ladd himself built the first Masonic Lodge in what is now Ankeny on December 10th of that year. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln was born in this town; he would later become US President and one of its most famous residents (see below). After serving as Mayor of Des Moines for two terms (1881-85),Republican Party nominee Abraham Lincoln ran for Congress to represent Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District but lost to Democrat David Capps by just 131 votes out of 2 million cast—a margin so close that some believe Lincoln may have won had he taken more majority districts into account. In 1895 Fenton opened an grocery store at 5135 E First St., which became one of the Great Western Grocery chains based in Des Moines today and still owns & operates a store there today – second only to Monsanto Co., Inc.. It wasn't until after World War II that farming families started moving back into Ankeny to take advantage of its fertile soil and good water resources; during these years dairy production went up dramatically as farmers turned to milk products instead of meat or eggs due to various wartime shortages across America related to food shortages caused by WWII rationing etcetera etcetera...But even without WWII it's fair to say things changed forever when Interstate 80 came through town - traffic truly exploded! That same decade saw major construction projects undertaken here including the erection/fiberglass building which later became known as “the I-80 Building” next door at 5236 E First Street – still standing today! This also markedDes Moines’ first interstate highway system junction point from east-west…..And then there were all those new shopping malls popping up everywhere…. folks were buying cars like never before! It's not hard these days (especially with all those new shopping malls) to forget just how busy everything used TO be back then…… especially when you consider that overpopulation has really taken hold (& continues unabated), resultant negative effects on both environment (& economy) being faced by everyone within our community…..& we can ONLY hope that some day our community will see true stability & prosperity once again……………………………………………………………
