Ankeny is a town in Butler County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,936 at the 2010 census. Ankeny was platted in 1851. It was named after John A. Ankeny, a rancher and Senator from Illinois who served in the U.S. Senate from 1855 to1859. The first post office in Ankeny was established on October 10, 1865, by George Wickersham. The townspeople built the first schoolhouse in 1867 and the first store in 1870. The first railroad reached Ankeny on November 6, 1873; it was called the "Iowa Central". In 1886, an election resulted in the installation of a county seat for Butler County at Ankeny; this position remained vacant until 1895 when elections were held to set up an official county government there. In 1906, ANKENY had a population of 3200 people and became one of several towns located along what is now Interstate 80 between Des Moines and Omaha that adopted electric lights as part of their municipal program during that year's celebration of America's centennial (the others were Burlington (Dodge City), Cedar Rapids (Ft Dodge), Council Bluffs (Council Bluffs), & Lanesboro). On July 1st 1909 local officials voted to name Town Center Place after Mrs Gertrude Smedley Ritchie-King who donated land for its construction near downtownAnkeny which included much of what is today known as North First Street On January 25th 1916 Community Service Day occurred when all male citizens over 21 years old were required to do community service tasks such as picking up trash or shoveling snow from sidewalks throughout their neighborhoods In 1946 local officials erected a new high school building which replaced the original frame buildings constructed some 40 years earlier
