Today, knifemakers use a variety of materials to make their knives, including stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, titanium dioxide (a type of dye), Damascussteel (a type of steel that is very sharp), and forged blades. Some people believe that the first knife was created by a man named Homo heidelbergensis in Africa about 4400 BC. Other sources state that the first knife was created by two brothers named Hohle und Hohlmeier in Germany about 8000 BC. The earliest reference to a knife comes from an ancient Chinese document called the I Ching which dates back to 7000 BC. After this invention came other advances in knife design and technology over time. Some of these advancements include: -The development of damascus steel which is made from 10% chromium content so it can resist corrosion -The incorporation of quillons into blade designs to improve slicing power -The use of artificial handles and hand guards

Ankeny is a town in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,834 at the 2010 census. The Website of the Cedar Rapids Community College provides more information about Ankeny and its history. The first settler in Ankeny was John Fenton who arrived in 1855. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Des Moines River. A post office was established in Ankeny on July 1, 1865, and remained in operation until December 31, 1868. The town grew rapidly after it was named for General Edward G. Smith (1814–1892), commander of Union forces during the American Civil War. Smith had been born near Ankeny and died there near Waterloo on April 12, 1892. Many people from Ankeny moved to Cedar Rapids to become involved with commerce and government service during the early days of Des Moines Valley settlement. In 1870, James Copley founded an agricultural colony at nearby Willmar which became known as Cherry Valley; he also founded what is now Redwood City northwest of Cedar Rapids; both towns were incorporated as cities in 1907.(Cherry Valley dissolved circa 1912). In 1882 William Hickey organized a mill company that became known as Hickey's Mills; this company manufactured flour and other goods from wheat germ meal produced by local farmers until 1922 when it discontinued operations due to high costs associated with competition from foreign mills.)(Hickey's Mills remains a popular tourist attraction today.) The community acquired its present name when General Edward Grafton Smith donated land for an Agricultural Experiment Station at what is now Ankeny High School in 1909.(Smith's gift has since been used for other purposes including housing development adjacent to school property.) A post office called Ankeny served residents of the town until 1907.(Although Post Office #2 operated from 1865-1868 under mail order before being closed down) However some residents took their mail to Morningside which later became Davenport.(Davenport changed its name to Sioux City in 1908 following incorporation into Iowa State University.) In 1925 community leaders decided that an isolated school would be better situated than central business district so they began construction on what would eventually become Des Moines Community College (then DesMoines Community Technical College). According to 2000 census data, almost all families living within one mile (1 km) of either direction lived below poverty level while only 6% of all families resided within one half mile (0.6 km) or less of any center.
