Ankeny, Iowa was once a center of gun trigger production. The town was home to the Ankeny Gun Company and many of its products were used in the American Civil War. In 1878, the company moved to Fort Dodge and continued making triggers until it closed in 1925. Many of the tools used by gun trigger creators such as Black & Decker and Singer are still in use today.

The town was founded by Danish immigrants in 1836 and incorporated as a village in 1841. Gun triggers are a type of trigger that is used to fire firearms. Trigger arms use a traditional pull-barrel design, with one or more metal plates that protrude from the top of the grip frame. The plates contact the striker when pulled and fire the firearm. Trigger mechanisms can be single- or double-action, with either an allen key or mechanical actuator. The oldest firearms were designed using triggers, and some evidence suggests that trigger systems were in place as early as 4500 BC. The ancient Greeks and Romans employed triggers in their firearms, but they did not develop them into what we know today. Trigger mechanisms first became common on muzzleloaders in the 18th century, when Nicolas-Jacques Conte developed a design for a percussion revolver that fired rounds by means of a simple plunger system activated by cocked pistols with flintlocks. These devices remained popular until about 1800 AD. From about 1800 to 1871, trigger action was primarily achieved through conversions of muzzleloader rifles to breechloading designs. This conversion involved moving the hammer from its rest on the barrel near the end of the rifle to within reach of an actuating lever on either side of the gunstock, which would then fire cartridges via capillary action (i.e.,umping powder down a tube and igniting it at impact). A number of early breechloading guns were built using this system - including several later models used by American forces during World War II - but it ultimately proved too complex and unreliable for practical use in combat conditions. In 1871, George Stephenson developed what is now known as British Pattern Gun (BP) 2 Breech Loading Rifle, which featured a new magazine release mechanism allowing round loading without having to remove the magazine Disable Bolt (and other associated parts), thus making it possible to operate various weapons in any position imaginable while reloading; this innovation has been called "the birth of modern military artillery." By 1897 however, all remaining muzzleloader guns had been replaced by breechloading rifles based on Allin–Blue principles (see below). Ankeny is a city in Hancock County, Iowa, United States. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County. The first settlers in what is now Ankeny were white men who arrived from Illinois in 1839. They built a log cabin on the edge of town and named it "Ankeny." The first store opened there in 1842. In 1865, Ankeny became the capital of Hancock County after the state was organized into counties. The first courthouse was built near downtown in 1868 and served as the county seat until 1917 when it moved to its current location south of town. In 1881, Ankeny had a post office with three employees and two mail carriers. By 1907, there were fifteen residents living in Ankeny; by 1920, there were twenty-one residents and by 1930, there were thirty-six residents. In 1940, an aerial view of Ankeny showed only six homes remaining from that year's population of seventy-five people; however, by 1945 all but four residences had been replaced with new homes or replaced with new businesses since then. During World War II (1941–1945), many civilians came to work on defense plants in nearby Des Moines because no other jobs existed for women at that time. Many women worked at local shops which closed during war due to lack of business after Pearl Harbor day (6 December 1941). Afterward many women left town for work but some stay behind to help their families while others moved out altogether because they could not support themselves financially during peacetime without government assistance such as food stamps or welfare benefits which would have stopped once hostilities ceased officially.. After war ended most citizens returned home except for a few military veterans who stayed until 1951 when they were evicted and forced to leave again due to overcrowding inside the city limits caused by wartime shortages caused by refugees from other parts of America brought over as part of President Truman's executive order known as "Operation Alaskan" which aimed to reduce isolationism among Americans following World War II ..
