Gun Target History in Ankeny, Iowa began with the first target shoot at the “Gunsite” on the banks of the Des Moines River in 1949. The site, now a park and community center, was donated by Mrs. Lillie Henson and is still home to agun range and target shooting events. It quickly became an annual event for Triggermen of America, Inc., which operated it until 1984. The Gunsite has been hosting target shoots ever since! It’s been a place where friends can come together to shoot some targets or just have some fun. The venue has also become an important part of history for many reasons: In 1952, triggermen from all over the Midwest gathered at the Gunsite to take part in their first national meeting. This was a time when they were trying to figure out how they could get organized and share information about their activities. In 1984, Triggermen of America Inc., changed its name to American Firearms Association (AFA). At this point, AFA started Hosting Events Across AMERICA- an effort that continues to this day! They continue takcing part in many local events around town as well as nationally across America.

Gun targets in Ankeny, Iowa date back to 1892. That year, the town of Ankeny created a Municipal Rifle and Pistol Club to improve competition among residents. The club used guns donated by local farmers. In 1898, the club staged its first rifle match and won first place. From then on, the club competed in annual tournaments that attracted top shooters from across the Midwest. In 1904, when Ankeny became a city, it joined forces with Cedar Rapids to form the Cedar Rapids Municipal Rifle and Pistol Club. The club continued to compete in annual tournaments until 1915 when it disbanded due to financial limitations. In 1922, the city of Ankeny formed its own municipal rifle and pistol society which used weapons donated by local businesses. The society held its first tournament that year and won second place. From then on, the club competed annually in regional tournaments that drew top shooters from across Iowa and Illinois. In 1959, when Ankeny became a state capital, it merged with Des Moines into one statewide gun society called “Iowa Association of State Capital Cities” (IASCC). As part of IASCC’s efforts to promote shooting sports within Iowa City neighborhood groups throughout the state capital area (including Ankeny), thecity began hosting annual rifle matches at Municipal Stadium downtown starting in 1961-62 under auspices of IASCC’s youth development program (YDP). These matches were open only to residents over 16 years old who resided within blocks of Municipal Stadium during regular game days between September 1st through April 30th inclusive; this was also an opportunity for young people aged 8 thru 17 years old who lived within blocks of Municipal Stadium during off-game days between September 1st through March 15th inclusive to participate as well as their parents/guardians if they accompanied their children onto Municipal Stadium during these game days! Ankeny is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 26,930 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. Ankeny is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area around Ankeny was first settled by English colonists in 1795 and became an incorporated town in 1854. The city grew rapidly during World War I, with its population reaching 110,000 by 1920. During the Great Depression, Ankeny lost most of its economic activity but regained some growth during the second half of the 20th century. The city has experienced periodic up-and-down fortunes since then, but it has consistently placed high on lists of America's "most vibrant cities". In 2015, Forbes named Ankeny as one of the "10 Best Places to Live" in America.

In 1854, Ankeny became part of what would become Iowa City. In 1915, Ankeny had its own post office and school district. Over time, commerce in and around Ankeny grew to include various businesses such as an ice cream parlor and a grocery store. By 2000, Ankeny's economy had shifted to service-based industries such as health care and manufacturing. Today, much of Ankeny's downtown core remains unchanged from when it first came into being - most notably its brick buildings dating back to the 1860s that still stand today. Additionally, several Pioneer Cabin descendants have continued to live in nearby Indianola since their ancestors arrived there in 1847. These days, many locals enjoy spending time outdoors or inside taking advantage of all that Ankeny has to offer – including two large parks complete with sports fields and a theater complex – making it one of central Iowa's most popular tourist destinations for residents and visitors alike!
Ankeny was founded by John Ankeny in 1847. The town was named after him and is located in Muscatine County, Iowa. In the 1870s, Ankeny became a manufacturing center for goods exported from Europe.
