Ankeny is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 7,598 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rock County. The first people to live in what is now Ankeny were the Potawatomi and their successors the Otoe. They founded a village called "Ankon" on an bluff overlooking the current site of town in 1836. In 1839, a group of English miners named Stephenson came across a claim near present-day Ankeny and began prospecting for coal there. In 1850, they built the first sawmill in what is now Ankeny after finding coal deposits on Smith's Creek nearby. The town was platted in 1851 by George Kapp and others under the name of "Kappville." In 1861, during the American Civil War, Sergeant John Fritchett of Company C Sixth Iowa Volunteer Infantry deserted his unit and joined Confederate forces instead. Heading south with other Deserters from Union Army units including Company A Eighth Iowa Volunteers (now First Baptist Church), Fritchett took part in several engagements outside Ankeny before finally surrendering at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Some 6500 soldiers lost their lives as a result of battlefield action within Iowa alone; about one-third of all Union casualties during the war. After World War II ended, Ankeny experienced growth due to its location as both an agricultural center for Rock County and service area for various industries such as mining, manufacturing and agriculture that developed throughout southwest Illinois and northwest Indiana until those states became independent nations in 1990s.
