Ankeny is a town in Scott County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Urbana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Ankeny was James Hinton in 1854. The town was platted on November 30, 1859 by John Fenton and William McGee. It had a population of only 44 people when it was incorporated on December 3, 1860. In the early 20th century, Ankeny became an important center for agriculture because its location provided ample irrigation waters for crops and livestock. Over time, industries have also arisen in Ankeny; including a paper mill and many businesses that provide services to residents and tourists alike. Today's economy depends heavily on medical tourism due to its location as well as its universities (Des Moines University and Drake University). nearby Waterloo International Airport makes Ankeny one of the most easily accessible cities in Iowa for air travel within minutes of both Des Moines and Chicago airports respectively. Additionally, Ankeny has become known as "The City" for its numerous festivals which take place throughout the year such as ArtPrize®, farmers' markets*, rodeo* and summer concerts*. The first gun sights were designed in the late 17th century by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. They were a series of metal plates that could be attached to a firearm's barrel, and allowed the user to determine the elevation of the weapon. In 1835, Captain George Armstrong designed and patented what is now known as the Armstrong Gun Sight. This sight consisted of an adjustable green prismatic lens that was screwed onto a barrel in order to provide accurate aiming at long ranges. It remained in use until 1855.
Ankeny was a small town in central Iowa from 1851 to 1909. It was founded by John Ankeny and his family, who arrived from the Czech Republic in 1847. The Ankenys were among the earliest settlers in what is now Iowa. They built a log cabin on the current site of Ankeny in 1851, and some of their descendants still live there. In 1905, Ankeny became one of ninety-six towns in the state of Iowa to become a city. The first residents of Ankeny were farmers and their families. After World War I, however, industrialization began to take hold in the town and many businesses closed. The population gradually shrunk as people moved away or died off; by 1929 it had only 100 citizens remaining. However, because of its small size and lack of attractions, Ankeny never lost its importance as a trading post or cultural center for nearby rural areas until after World War II when construction began on Interstate 20 made it easier to travel through the area. Today, Ankeny is an agricultural community with a few scattered commercial buildings dating back to before World War II. Its main attraction is its Historic District which contains dozens of restored pioneer homes and outbuildings as well as several churches dating back to the early 1800s.
Ankeny was founded in 1847 by George W. Ankeny and his wife, Sarah. The first post office in the town was established in 1848. In 1880, Ankeny had a population of 346 residents and a total of 10 businesses.
