He started a blacksmith shop on the east side of town in 1851 and continued to operate it until his death in 1907. The most important factor that drove Condon to start a blacksmith shop here was his need for supplies for his farmstead and other businesses he ran along the Des Moines River. John A. Condon's son, George, took over business at the father's death and operated it until 1934. In that time, George also developed a reputation as a knowledgeable firearm dealer and collector who would sell anything from shotguns to rifles to handguns. One of George Condon's sons, Harold (1928-2010), inherited running the business after his father's death but soon realized that there were many items still unaccounted for from their father’s collection which housed guns dating back to 1852-1875 inclusive! Harold cobbled together what little information he had about these guns and started sales at an antique fair held annually in Ankeny since 1978 where he featured more than just old firearms; he offered unique experiences like demonstrations on how they were made or cleaned or used during different times periods from American history! This led him over 1,000 square feet of floor space inside his showroom alone! In 2004, Harold sold all assets of The Gun Store Inc., including its building located at 511 E Main Street in Ankeny,Iowa to five individuals who founded Heritage Firearms Industries LLC: Donny Moran/Rick Bogan (President/ CEO), Todd Green (Vice President/COO), Geoff Coleman (Executive Secretary), Chris Haughey (Sales Representative) & Steve Payne (Parts Specialist). Heritage Firearms Industries is now one of only a few privately owned gun stores left remaining nationally within its industry! The community was organized on January 10, 1857 from a group of settlers that had gathered around the "Camp Ankeny." The original name for the town was Gahanna. In 1870, the post office called it Ankeny after Johnathon Ankney, an early settler in this area. On April 12th, 1907, Ankeny local merchants and officials voted to rename their town to honor General George Armstrong Custer who had died in battle two years earlier while serving with the Union army in Oklahoma. According to the United States Census Bureau, Ankeny has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,477 people, 527 households, and 346 families residing in the town. The population density was 108 people per square mile (42/km²). There were 684 housing units at an average density of 52 per square mile (20/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%of the population.
