The community of Ankeny was established on a site northeast of present-day Ankeny on the banks of the Des Moines River. It grew rapidly because it had access to good irrigation water from nearby bluffs and hillsides, which allowed for large cotton crops that yielded high profits for its merchants and farmers. Cotton production declined beginning in the 20th century, but revived during World War II when American soldiers brought new technology to help them produce more food with less labor than ever before. By 1960, however, Ankeny's economy had begun to decline again due to changes in population patterns and transportation habits; its population decreased from 14,000 to 10,000 over the next three decades. In 2001, however, Ankeny began to experience a rebirth as a bedroom community for Cedar Rapids; its population increased from 10,000 to 14,000 between 2001 and 2006 alone (the latest figures available). Today's citizens are proud of their history and culture: local businesses still sell items made locally such as quilts and lace; there are annual festivals including cornhusker chili cook-offs;and volunteer groups engage in many activities including historical research into local history topics (e.g., Fenton County settlers). Despite these challenges – primarily economic –Ankeny remains active both economically and culturally within its own community while also accommodating growth outside of it through partnerships with neighboring communities such as Cedar Rapids or Moline

Today, much of Ankeny is still Struggling to recover from the ravages of time: Many homes are falling apart or are uninhabitable due to damage sustained during Superstorm Sandy; Businesses have closed or were bought out by competitors in recent years; Streets are choked with gravel as a result of previous construction projects;and there is little hope that any new development will come through until repairs can be made to some of the older buildings
Ankeny was founded in 1847 by George Ankeny and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly after being platted in 1848. In 1870, the Iowa Legislature designated Ankeny as the seat of Muscatine County. In 1875, the Burlington Railroad reached Ankeny and began to provide transportation for local farmers and their goods to market. This contributed to the growth of the town. The first school in Ankeny was built in 1850. The first post office opened in 1865. In 1887, a large fire destroyed most of downtown Ankeny but not before causing significant damage to many businesses and homes. A new church was constructed in 1888 and became operational that year. A new public library was built in 1915 and served the town until 1978 when it closed due to budget cuts brought about by World War II. Ankeny is now a small community with a population of around 100 people
