In 1868 John Ankeny established Ankeny City Limits on both sides of what is now State Street between 1st Avenue South and 2nd Avenue South in what is now downtown Ankeny George Alloway established Alloway City Limits on each side of State Street between 1st Avenue South and 2nd Avenue South Both villages were incorporated on February 10th 1870 under Act No. 311 of that year On October 12th 1870 an act entitled “An Act to organize Des Moines Township” was passed by Iowa House of Representatives On November 5th 1870 township boundaries were changed from: north to east side of State Street southwesterly limits including all land lying west from said east side thence northerly to where Iowan Railroad crosses said street within Indianola County line subject matter thereto being divided into lots thereon let out for buildings purposes etc There are numerous anecdotes about early days when these townships didn't quite fit together like we do today with so much open space . One story says that George Alloway wanted to name his town "Ankletown" but John vetoed it because he thought Ankletown would be too close to Sioux City

The town started as a trading post on the I-80 road. In 1851, it became an incorporated village after voting to become one. The name "Ankeny" was first given to it by John Galt in memory of his father who had sold him land here for $1 per acre (or $10 per mile). In 1907, Ankeny hosted the world's largest livestock show with more than 350,000 animals from all over the world. That event continues to be remembered as one of its most memorable moments because it helped start a tradition of hosting large agricultural shows here every three years or so.
