Ankeny is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 11,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. Ankeny was founded on November 3, 1854 by George Ankeny and James Mahoney as a small community in about two square miles of land that now includes much of downtown Ankeny. The town grew quickly because it was located near a wagon road from Council Bluffs to Iowa City, which made goods easy to move between the two cities. In 1857 the first Semi-Auto Rifle Factory in America was established in Ankeny by John Fetterman and others who brought over some European rifles to be used in local rifle campaigns against Native Americans. In 1862 when Union General Donelson attacked Abraham Lincoln's army at Pea Ridge outside poker chips on horseback with his famed " whipped dog" troops, many residents of Ankeny turned out to see what they could do to help their commander-in-chief fight off an overwhelming Confederate force led by Nathan Bedford Forrest. That day will always be remembered as one of history’s most dramatic moments. Ankeny experienced its heyday during World War I with more than 1,000 businesses active in war production; however, after the war ended there were no military industries left standing in town other than agriculture and manufacturing until today. After decades of decline caused by various factors such as population growth (an all too common phenomena throughout much rural America), economic recession and then large waves of migration from rural areas into major urban centers like Des Moines and Omaha alienated many longtime residents who felt they had been taken advantage of for years by those who should have known better. The once vibrant communities that surrounded downtown finally fell victim to suburban sprawl and neglect as families chose not to leave their homes for fear they would lose their access to good schools or high quality lifestyle amenities; this has resulted in an overall decline over time that has completely obliterated any sense of community among people who once lived together hereabouts A recent effort spearheaded by Mayor Tom Naumann including support from both businesses and citizens has begun restoration efforts which are hoped will create some measure backhanded compliment--the revitalization actually leads to job creation!

Ankeny is a small town in Iowa, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines, IA–KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Ankeny was James K. Caldwell in 1847. He and his family built a cabin on the present site of the townsite on Elk Creek. Caldwell's grandson, John K. Caldwell, purchased land east of Ankeny from Osage Indians in 1865 for $2 per acre (1/4 dollar per mile). In 1873, he organized the town into a township and named it after himself, Ankeny Township No. 2 (later renamed Ankeny Township No., Inc.). In 1892 when Iowa became a state, Caldwell donated to the state government about 640 acres (24 km²) northeast of Ankeny for use as a parkland preserve; this area now includes both parts of downtown Ankeny and much of rural northwestern Des Moines County. The first post office in Ankeny was established on October 25, 1884 by Leland Geddes with Averill Waugh as its first employee. The name changed to Cedar Rapids Post Office on November 3rd due to an equipment failure at Pemberton's store that caused widespread damage throughout Cedar Rapids city limits; Pemberton refused to take responsibility for the loss and resigned from his position effective December 1st instead. The new post office reopened on January 2nd following repairs done by J Faddis who also served as assistant postmaster until May 1926 when he retired due to ill health.. A fire destroyed most of Cedar Rapids Monday morning August 26th 1905 . This event has been called one of Chicago’s worst fires ever
Ankeny, Iowa was founded in 1868 by Isaac Ankeny and his wife Anna. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of oil in the area, and by 1907 it had a population of over 1,000 people. It became an important center for oil production during World War I and the Depression, and saw growth again in the 1940s and 1950s. In the 1960s and 1970s, violence frequently plagued Ankeny, culminating in a series of riots that left several people dead. In recent years, however, Ankeny has seen some revitalization as a commercial and cultural center.
