Ankeny is a city in Douglas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,626 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–Hiawatha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Ankeny was George Capps who came to the area in 1849. The present-day city was founded on December 15, 1854 by James Pemberton and others from neighboring towns of unincorporated Clearfield and Hiawatha. A post office called Ankeny was established in 1857, and remained open until it closed on February 13, 1916. The original site for the current city had been lying vacant since 1854 when James Pemberton platted what would become Ankeny with land he owned west of Clearfield River. Development began quickly after Pemberton's plat was approved by the Iowa General Assembly on April 12, 1856; construction began on what would eventually be known as Council Bluffs (now downtown) within one year. By 1860 enough development had occurred to warrant incorporation as a town; Ankeny became an incorporated municipality under state law on November 1, 1860. In 1870 the town reached its peak with a population of 3200; however, rapid growth declined thereafter as pull factors such as railroads and other economic opportunities supplanted farming economy amongst other reasons for declineTowns throughout central Iowa experienced similar patterns during this time period: accelerated population growth followed by modest economic development or contraction due to outside forces including railroads which often replaced agricultural production In 1902 aspects of operation typical of larger cities led to heavy criticism when Mayor John Sweeney proposed annexing parts of Council Bluffs into his municipality without consulting Council Bluffs residents or offering them an opportunity to have their say via referendum In 1907 fire destroyed most of Council Bluffs which forced mayor Sweeney to seek approval from the State Legislature for a new City Hall complex that would serve both municipalities concurrently After much public opposition failed to garner passage through either chamber Sweeney relocated City Hall functions back to Council Bluffs before finally closing down Ankeny's municipal government effective January 1st 1908 . As an result many businesses vacated downtown following its closure while others chose not reopen because they were unable afford replacement property With only 652 residents living within city limits at its peak Village Green Shopping Center serving as sole commercial outlet until it closed in 1990 mall redevelopment efforts gradually took hold over ensuing years resulting in increased residential density and more commercial activity along former shopping center routes

The history of Ankeny began with the arrival of pioneers in 1847. They were led by Simon Ankeny, who had emigrated from Hungary a few years earlier. He and his family set up a basecamp on the present-day site of downtown Ankeny on July 26th,1847. From this location they managed to survey much of what would become Iowa Territory. Their map of the area shows that they named their community after Mount Ankeny (present-day Council Bluffs), an important peak in Hungary which they had seen from their campground. In addition to surveying the area for future development, the ANKENY FAMILY also built a mill here during their first year in town. This mill was one of many new businesses started during this time as people ventured into rural areas for new opportunities. One such opportunity was settlement by men seeking land west of Chicago as part of the Great Northwest Land Rush period (1854-1865). With access to free land and good transportation connections through Kansas City, migrants arrived here at an unprecedented rate during this time period. By 1850, when census figures were available, Ankeny had reached its current size with around 50 families residing within its limits (already larger than any other town in Iowa). During this time frame several civic organizations were formed including the Alpha Rifles militia company which served as local defense against Indian raids; two churches; a schoolhouse; and two stores/warehouses all serving as businesses until 1861 when all but one shuttered due to financial difficulties caused by yellow fever pandemic(). During these difficult times some key citizens stepped up to help create stability both politically and economically within their community: John Aiken opened his successful grocery store in 1861; Abram Seliger organized streetcars for travel within town; Elijah Bick provided essential goods like flour and grocers’ meat from outlying farms near Sioux City for local consumption; John Gorman built a sawmill providing lumber needed for construction projects throughout town while also becoming involved with banking and commerce.; Solomon Sibley ran an adobe brick factory east of town beginning production in 1865 which soon supplied mostofthetown'scemetery needs.; George Fenton established an ambulance service that transported patients across Iowa state lines during times of emergency.; Finally preacher James Witherspoon published The Republican News paper which functioned as both news source and social media outlet for village residents (). Today there are several reminders of those early days including Simon & Peter's Mill where tours are available every day between 11am-3pm., Mayor Alma Menges' House where she resided from 1915 until her death in 2009, Pioneer Cemetery located just south off I-235 between First Street & State Street containing various pioneer graves dating back to 1847 along with artifacts related thereto.,and numerous small shops/cafeterias located throughout downtown featuring memorabilia or products made locally
