Ankeny is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Ankeny is the second largest city in Polk County after Cedar Rapids. The current mayor of Ankeny is Democrat Ron Christie. The town originally started as a settlement by Scandinavian immigrants in 1854. It became an agricultural center and eventually developed into a manufacturing center due to its location on the Des Moines River. In 1907, Ankeny earned its nickname "The City of Progress" for having become one of the first cities in the country to approve municipal planning regulations. In 1916, it designated itself as the "Centerville of America" for being one of the few American cities to have both a high school and an agricultural university. During World War II, Ankeny played host to numerous military installations and production plants associated with war effort including Ford Motor Company's Willow Run Arsenal, Pillsbury Doughboy Corp.'s Proctor-Robbins Factory and Wichita Gas & Electric's Hutchinson plant #1 (now part of MidAmerican Energy). This industrial growth created many new jobs throughout Ankeny while also contributing significantly to blight that has plagued much of downtown since the late 1960s. This urban renewal process began during Mayor John Fenton's administration in the early 1970s and continued through his successors until Mayor Christie took office in 2009. During his tenure, many businesses closed or relocated due to cost overruns or other difficulties encountered during construction projects; however, recent redevelopment efforts have resulted in significant increases in job opportunities for residents and commuters alike: The revitalization has attracted over $100 million worth of development investment so far (2008 dollars) which has assistance from state government coffers totaling almost $50 million since 2006 alone; most notably Target Center which opened up next door on State Street just east of Interstate 80/ US Highway 31 after years spent under various names including Shapiro’s Plaza, First National Bank plaza and T-Mobile plaza before finally gaining final approval from city planners last year marking another major step forward for downtown redevelopment spearheaded by Mayor Christie himself

Ankeny is a town in eastern Iowa, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Ankeny was John Aiken, who arrived in 1827. At that time it was a small frontier community with only a few houses and 100 settlers. By 1840, Ankeny had over 200 residents and 5 businesses. Its population grew rapidly during the mid-19th century as wagon trains passed through on their way to the east for work on the American railroads. In 1850, Ankeny had 3 stores and 14 residents; by 1860 it had 7 stores and 100 residents. In 1870, Ankeny had 12 stores and 150 residents; by 1880 it had 17 stores and 300 residents. In 1881, an act of Congress made Iowa a state; Ankeny became an unincorporated community within the new state. The population of Ankeny reached its peak around 1900 when it had 30 storeowners and 400 citizens living in 204 homes. However, during World War I (1915-18) this increased to over 500 people due to wartime shortages of foodstuffs in other states. During World War II (1939-1945), much of the cotton production which took place in central Iowa dwindled because so many farmers moved away from cotton farming after experiencing terrible losses due to pests and disease such as Weevils infested with Cotton Moths (a type of moth). As a result of these events, by 1950 there were only 15 storeowners left in Ankeny while its population numbered 1,500 people according to the 2000 census survey results which showed that most locals now reside outside of town limits or are no longer affiliated with any local community services or organizations
