Ankeny is a town in Hardin County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Ankeny is the county seat of Hardin County. It is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. The first settler in what became Ankeny was John Cook in 1858. Cook's family moved to what is now Ankeny from Wapello Township, Illinois and founded a small community there on the east side of Cedar Creek near present-day Depot Road and State Highway 2A (now US Highway 6). The first post office in this community was established in 1859, and it continued operations until 1902. In 1871, Captain George Hebard discovered oil shale near Ankeny and developed an oil well there for himself and his partners under the name Hebard & Porter Oil Company. In 1872, Captain Hebard donated land to build a school on which the current high school stands. This school served students through grades 9–12 until 1982 when it became known as Ankeny Community College District High School. The early years of this college were difficult due to competition from other schools within Hardin County for students and faculty members who wanted to stay here after completing their education at local colleges or universities. However, over time ACDC has grown into one of Des Moines' most important educational institutions with more than 12,000 undergraduate students and 7,500 graduate students currently enrolled statewide!
