The town was founded in 1881 by farmers from Illinois and other Western states who had come to find new land for farming. The first post office was established in 1881, and the first store opened in 1886. The townsite was laid out by J.H. Weller and Wm. Ayer on February 14, 1881. They named it "Ankeny" after the village of Ankon in Bohemia, Austria (now part of the Czech Republic). The original plat shown to the public shows an adobe building with a white roof and brown trim on a rise near center of town square which served as the only shop or tavern until 1925 when a garage became available on Main Street that led into the present day bank building across from High School Auditorium/Gymnasium which served as both stores until 1984 when it closed due to lack of customers; today's Kwik Shop across from Middle School serves as local grocery store since that year In 1905 Heman Cramer began operating a blacksmith shop adjoining his farmstead known as 'The forge.' Unfortunately this business did not last very long either because he died young soon after purchase leaving no children to carry on...In 1907 two more stores were added: one operated by Mrs Brinker (the current hardware store) down State street from Courthouse before she bought out Mrs Weller's interest; also located at what is now courthouse square next door to Kwik Shop vanishingly fast adjacent thereto 2 years later another store: Mrs Smith's gift &Hardware open along sideMrs Smiths Hardware Store which still stands today 3 more stores total between 1906-present making Ankeny one of extreme late 19th century boomtown! All seven businesses existing at time are still extant including four currently housed inside buildings downtown - all structures dating back over 100 years! One interesting fact about Ankeny during its heyday is that there were never any fires anywhere within limits even close to town square - something unheard of back then especially with such high densities of people living close together like they do now! This came about largely due to social cooperation among residents who would go out for walks or picnics just outside their homes knowledgeably keeping their fire places lit always ready for use should anything happen while away!
