It was named for John Ames, an early settler and one of the first men to come to Douglas County. The Ames-Council Bluffs Micropolitan Statistical Area had a population of 923 people as of July 1, 2000. The town began as just a small farming community with a few houses and businesses built around 1870. By 1880, Ames had grown into a large town with over 100 residents. In 1912, the city of Council Bluffs was destroyed by fire and its inhabitants were forced to flee their homes; this left Ames as the sole surviving city in Douglas County. At the same time, however, other towns quickly grew up around Ames; this growth led to what is now known as "The rotational boom" in Iowa history – successive waves of new residents moving into specific areas followed by periods of decline until finally re-growth occurred which has continued uninterrupted ever since. In recent years there have been several efforts made to keep Ames afloat economically and make it more likeable for tourists – including creating an outdoor arts festival (the largest such event in eastern Iowa), development of new retail locations along Interstate 35E and plans for an expansion of Route 12W from its current routing near downtown to connect with I-35E outside the city limits
