Ames, Iowa is a city located in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 8,844 at the 2010 census and has grown to 11,045 since the 2010 census. Ames was founded in 1853 by George Washington Ames as "Alden" on the north side of town. It became a city on December 12, 1899. The first public telescope in Ames was built by Salem Latham and Brother Isaac Newton in 1882. The first scopes that were used to view stars at night were made out of glass and had a magnification of only about 10x! One of the most important events of early Ames occurred when General George Armstrong Custer rode into town to purchase supplies for his army during the Mexican-American War on July 8,1846. This event is also known as "the day we saved Iowa". In 1857, Amos native Olin Payson opened a store and post office in what is now downtown Ames. He would later become one of the most important figures in local history because he helped develop many aspects of local life including education and farming which would have a major impact on future generations. One such development was Payson's School House which served as both school and courthouse until it burned down in 1916. On November 3rd, 1886, President Grover Cleveland signed into law an act creating Kimball Agricultural College (later UIUC) within Kimball Agricultural District No.(4). The college would be affiliated withIowa State University (ISU) through an Act of Congress dated November 14th 1907 which created “The Iowa State University Foundation” with authority to make all grants whatsoever to Iowan colleges and universities without regard to state lines or appropriations by congressmen thereof; Provided further That said foundation may not accept any gift more than five percent (5%) of its total assets at any time
