In the early 1800s, Ames was a thriving community. The city was founded in 1847 by George W. Ames and it quickly became an important center for commerce and education. It is Situated on the Iowa River, making it a strategic location for trade and transportation. In addition to its commercial importance, Ames also boasted one of the most renowned universities in the United States at that time- The Des Moines University. At one point, Ames had over 20 businesses and 300 residents. However, throughout the years, many of these businesses have closed or been replaced by more modern ones. One of the earliest businesses in Ames was a gunsmith called Smith & Wesson which operated from 1849 to 1865. Today, this business is still active as a firearms dealership with four locations across Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Clinton and Newtonia. Another early business in town was The Lighthouse Coffee House which opened its doors on May 2nd of 1851. This coffee house served as a social center for local citizens until it burned down in 1886. Facing public criticism for their failure to secure safety measures during this time period, several members of the city council ultimately decided to close down all but two of their stores within five years due to concern about similar problems happening again and again throughout town (City Council Minutes - June 3rd 1887). The last major business closure occurred back in 1924 when The Armoury closed its doors after operating for 44 years ( CITY COUNCIL MEMO - APRIL 24TH 1924). At that time, there were only 10 residents living within walking distance of downtown who could access anything from grocery stores right up to movie theaters! This lack of economic diversity has led some historians to suggest that downtown may have experienced less development than other areas due to its proximity alone; however this theory remains unproven As recently as the 1990s there were still few if any businesses open late into the night near downtown; however since then things have changed dramatically! With new development coming online regularly overnight such as office buildings next door and luxury apartments going up next door; downtown now enjoys significant daytime traffic flow with multiple restaurants/bars/cafes readily available both before work/before class etc.; additionally there are now several large retail stores nearby such as Sears & Roebuck which provides additional employment opportunities during off hours . It should be noted that while shootings have continued sporadically occurring even today outside of downtown; recent events seem much more targeted towards residential neighborhoods just east or west of downtown where cars often drive up onto sidewalks directly behind residences instead thereof stopping short allowing perpetrators ample opportunity fire shots into unsuspecting victims
