However, by 1920DES MOINES had shrunk to 8,500 residents due to outmigration and economic depression brought on by the war effort. In 1925the city limits were expanded to include present-day Ames and parts of rural Cook County including West Des Moines and North Des Moines. In 1932Des Moines annexed part of Cedar Rapids Municipality; eventually all cities within Polk County would be annexed into Des Moines excepting West Des Moines which seceded in 1961 to become an independent city with its own government separate from that of Des Moines proper
