In 1853, George Peabody and his two partners, Amos Kendall and Col. Rufus C. Bean, bought a small property on the east side of Ames in what is now the downtown area. They began to improvements on the land, including building a gristmill and a sawmill. In 1857, they donated the land for what is now Iowa State University. The university was founded as an agricultural school but soon became known for its academic excellence and research programs. During the 1930s, holster manufacturing activity increased in Ames because of World War II shortages of firearms components. Holster companies developed holsters specifically for American military use during World War II that allowed soldiers to carry weapons with more comfortable style than earlier designs. After the war ended, many holstermakers merged or closed their businesses into one another in order to continue producing high-quality holsters for civilians as well as law enforcement officers throughout North America.
