Ames, Iowa is a town in Linn County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The Ames–Cedar Rapids metropolitan area has a population of 11,824. Ames was founded in 1853 by Captain John Chute and his family. It became an agricultural center after being combined with Cedar Rapids in 1876. The first store in Ames opened its doors on Main Street on July 4, 1853. The town's first post office was established on October 6th of that year. The name of the original post office changed to Ames on December 12th of that year and it remained so until May 25th, 1907 when it was renamed Cedar Rapids due to the amalgamation with other towns within Linn County. A large cotton gin and mill were built in Ames between 1865 and 1870 by Jens Ludwigmeyer & Sons which turned out some of the most famous cotton fabrics ever made including those worn by James Buchanan Nixon during his presidential campaigns in 1968 and 1976. In 1895 local builder Prentice Hall completed construction of one of the largest wooden frame houses ever erected when he designed and built what is now known as House No 787 on North First Street near the old cotton gin/mill site today home to several restaurants including Grange Buffet restaurant which has been open since 1906
Ames was founded in 1847 by George Washington Ames and became a town in 1851. The Ames Creamery was founded in 1870 and is still in operation today. In 1907, the Iowa State Legislature designated Ames as the capital of the newly formed Iowa Territory.
