In 1872, Iowa City began to build a new city hall. The building was designed in the Gothic Revival style and was funded by a group of wealthy farmers. The city council decided to place the target shooting ranges within the city limits, and on May 5th, 1872, the first target shoot occurred at the new CITY HALL range. There were only 12 people in attendance, but it quickly became an annual event. In 1893, there was a drive to raise money for a new rifle range and many prominent citizens contributed money. On July 4th of that year, 100 people gathered at CITY HALL for an impressive show of fire arms which included cannons and rifles from all overIowa. By 1898, there were several rifle ranges within town limits with space for 350 shooters. On November 1st of that year, THE GOLF COURSE opened its doors with 444 shooters from 22 countries participating in 9 different matches including amateur and professional events. From 1899-1901 THERE WAS A DRIVING TO RAISE MONEY FOR A NEW RANGE AND ON JUNE 20TH OF THAT YEAR THE FIRST SHOOTING PARTY WAS DONE AT THE RAILROAD BARN WITH OVER 200 SHOOTERS FROM ALL OVER IOWA INCLUDING AMATEUR AND PRO CLASSPersonnel served as spotters while spectators watched from various locations around town

There was a small gunsmith business that operated out of an old barn on North Third Street for many years. In 1907, a law was passed allowing citizens to own handguns without having to pass a gun safety class. This law led to increased gun sales in Ames and throughout Iowa. As more people became comfortable with handguns, there was also an increase in shootings and accidents involving firearms. In 1916, the first handgun homicide occurred in Ames when one man shot another while they were arguing over a pistol at an apartment building. Through the 1920s and 1930s, Ames saw an increase in crime rates as well as firearm ownership by individuals who weren’t licensed or properly trained with firearms. Gun homicides decreased during this time period but remained high due to gang activity and mistaken identity shootings among criminals. In 1934, the Iowa Legislature passed legislation which required all civilians who possessed handguns to have a NRA card or be fingerprinted and have their weapons inspected before being allowed to possess them again. This policy helped reduce gun violence within Iowa City and other areas of the state during this time period. Throughout World War II, guns were often confiscated from Americans who were located within enemy territory so that they couldn’t use them against their foes both domestically and abroad. However, due to constitutional rights concerns relating to self-defense, most Americans were able to keep their firearms until after hostilities ended in 1945. After World War II ended, civilian handgun ownership increased once again through 1949 although there still wasn’t universal access granted across all states like it had been prior to wartime – this was primarily because new regulations had been put into place following outlawing of assault rifles (rifles that could fire multiple rounds per minute) by federal authorities back then).
