It was settled by farmers from Sweden beginning in 1834 who named their town after Captain John Fitch because he had helped build some of the first roads in that part of America.[1] In 1854, when Captain Fitch founded Ames as a small town on the eastern tip of the Ames River,[2] he named it after himself because he saw it as an opportunity to improve his prospects for becoming rich through trade with nearby Missouri City (now Overland Park). On July 7th 1850 Amos had its first election[3], four days after Iowa's admission into Union as a state.[4] The citizens elected Isaac Harmon as Mayoralty Vice President with Arenton Thacher taking Second Place; Harmon served one term until December 12th 1850 when Arenton Thacher was elected Governor.[5][6][7][8]:146–147 On January 1st 1851 Captain Fitch moved his business operations from Moline to what is now downtown Ames so that he could better serve his growing community.[9]:217 From this point forward captain Fitch's name appeared on most official documents dating back to those earliest days:[10]:218 He also founded or donated many institutions within today's downtown area such as First Presbyterian Church (1859), Masonic Lodge No 2 (1860), Methodist Episcopal Church (1861), United States Market House (1862), & Friends Meeting House (1863).[11]:314 In 1860CaptainFitchmergedwithAaronDillardtoformDes Moines Chancery Bar & Trust Company which later became Des Moines National Bank
