The city of Ames lies just to the east of Ames on the opposite bank of the river. The first settler at Ames was James Purdy, who arrived in 1875. He and his wife, Ellen, started a grocery store and farm near what is now North First Street and East Washington Avenue. Mr. Purdy's store soon became a center for learning about agriculture and commerce in central Iowa; he taught classes on horticulture, milling crops, baking goods, brewing beer or whiskey and teaching farmers how to raise horses and cattle. In addition to retail sales, Mr. Purdy also ran a school for children from age six to eighteen years old which he purchased from De Witt Clinton in 1876 (Clinton had built it into an imposing two-story brick building that still stands today). In 1880 Rev John Waddell moved his family from Keokuk County to Ames after purchasing an acreage along the Des Moines River that would later become part of downtown Des Moines. He began buying land around what is now First Street/East Washington Avenue where he erected a large frame house with twelve rooms that still stands today as Town Hall Building No 1 (the original name given to it by Ames Township trustees upon its incorporation into city government). In 1881 Rev Waddell married Marguerite Jensdorf (née Hirsch) who had also come from Keokuk County Some time earlier; they eventually had four children: Edward A., Clara M., John E., + Alice Gertrude Waddell Youngblood . 'the first church dedicated anywhere within this limits" was consecrated on December 15th 1888 by Rev John Waddell with Reverend Emmet Cady officiating . [It] stood until 1889 when it caught fire due to carelessness by some members during services! After repairs were made it was again used for worship until 1893 when construction began on what would become First Baptist Church which remains standing today as well as many other buildings associated with early Methodist churches in downtownDesMoines." In 1895 Dr William Hulton donated land south of Second Street/East Third Avenue between South Third Street/West Fourth Avenue and West Fifth Avenue where he erected another large frame house which served as both his home and office until 1905 when he donated another piece of property - this time along South Sixth Street/West Seventh Avenue - which became known asDrury House Hotel . During this time Drury House Hotel played an important role not only because it housed City Council meetings but also because President Grover Cleveland spent three nights there while visiting Iowa state fairgrounds northwest of Des Moines during October 1893 – November 3rd 1893 One hundred years later Drury House Hotel still stands unaltered across South Sixth Street/West Seventh Avenue from east TO west!
