Most of these early settlers were farmers who grew corn, wheat, soybeans, potatoes, cottonseed oil (a key element for shipping), dairy products (milk and cheese),igs (rabbits),and large animals like hogs and horses. By 1860 most of these settlers had moved out west or east across the state line into new states such as Kansas Territory or Nebraska Territory due to land availability or political changes back East caused by Manifest Destiny theories which held that America would be ruled by white American men only. In 1845 George White organized a group of nine farmers who had emigrated from Illinois to start a village on the west side of town Robert Sibley later named Village Green after him near what is now State Street/Upper Kinnickinnic Avenue). This early effort failed but did establish some friendly relationships with other established villages around this time including Burlington on the eastern edge of present-day Des Moines County where young George White went to school; Council Bluffs on the Missouri River just north of Iowa City; Milton on Lake Hiawatha about northwest of Des Moines; West Newton on Elk Creek about northeast of Sioux City; Millville on Cedar Creek about southwest Of Fort Dodge; New Ulm about southeast Of Waterloo;and Geneva under one roof before finally disbanding it due to lack support from others near & far from their little outpost located along what are now Appleton Road/Old Highway 40 southward from downtown IA
